    Commandant James M. Loy, left, U. S. Coast Guard, presents Senior Chief Tom Rau the JOC Alex Haley Award for outstanding achievement in public affairs for his syndicated column "Boat Smart."


    Boat Smart is a column written by Senior Chief Tom Rau (ret) and edited by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Milwaukee command.
    It appears in a number of Midwest newspapers. Chief Rau has been writing and promoting safe boating since 1986. Many of his columns are taken from real life experiences and rescues conducted by the Coast Guard and other marine rescue agencies around Lake Michigan. Now, those same columns, along with useful links and helpful boating tips, are available on boatsmart.net
